Plan it. Measure it. Build it!
Turn area and perimeter into an exciting, hands-on learning experience with The Great Farm Design Challenge!
In this creative mathematics investigation, students become farm designers, planning and building their very own farm while applying their understanding of area, perimeter and spatial reasoning.
Students decide which animals, buildings and features to include, calculate how much space they need, and design their farm using grid paper. They can then bring their designs to life by constructing a 3D model using cardboard, recycled materials, clay and other craft supplies.
But the challenge doesn't stop there! Unexpected arrivals and new farm requirements encourage students to rethink their designs, solve problems and make improvements.
What's Included?
This 4-page A3 landscape printable resource includes:
Page 1 – Plan Your Farm: Explore space requirements, choose farm features and calculate the area needed.
Page 2 – Design and Build: Draw a farm plan, calculate area and perimeter, investigate fencing and create a 3D model.
Page 3 – Farm Challenges: Respond to unexpected changes, redesign the farm and recalculate measurements.
Page 4 – Farm Grid Paper: A full-page grid for planning, drawing and refining farm designs.
Learning Opportunities
Students will:
Apply area and perimeter in a meaningful, real-world context.
Develop spatial reasoning and measurement skills.
Make independent decisions and justify their choices.
Explore different ways to organise and use space efficiently.
Design, construct, test and improve a 3D model.
Develop creativity, problem-solving and collaboration skills.
Why Teachers Will Love It
This open-ended investigation allows students to work at different levels of complexity, making it ideal for differentiated mathematics learning.
With flexible design choices, hands-on construction and opportunities for extension, students can approach the challenge in their own way.
Perfect for mathematics investigations, collaborative projects, STEM learning and enrichment activities.
Format: Digital PDF | 4 A3 landscape pages
Simple learning, confident kids.
